Update on High School Expectations Committee Work

At the January 11 Board of Trustees meeting, board member Rita Walsh, the chair of the High School Expectations Committee, reported on the committee’s recent work. Made up of teachers, parents, principals and students, the committee has been meeting in an effort to improve student attendance district-wide. The committee and the board believe students who show up for their classes regularly, do better.

Their efforts will improve the experiences of high school students across our district. Because of Committee work on the attendance issue, Trustee Walsh was able to provide an update of committee recommendations to the Board of Trustees.

Walsh reported that the recommendations from the H.S. Expectations Committee would be sent to the Board Policy Committee so they can make updates to the district’s current attendance policy. Also, she outlined three action items based on committee suggestions:

  • The high school leadership team will explore the idea of closing campus for all freshmen
  • The high school leadership team will study high absence Fridays
  • Community Relations will develop a communication and marketing campaign to educate and inform the community about the importance of school attendance

The H.S. Expectations Committee will have an opportunity to review any proposed policy changes before the school board gives final approval. Committee members will also be able to review draft plans on the three listed action items when they are completed.

Thank you to the members of the H.S. Expectations Committee for their dedication and commitment in working to improve Natrona County Schools.
