Important Information on Hathaway Scholarship Eligibility

Important Information on Hathaway Scholarship Eligibility

Recently, the Wyoming State Legislature passed Senate File 0043 – Hathaway Scholarship Eligibility. This change to Hathaway eligibility requirements provides a great opportunity for students who may previously not have been eligible to receive the Hathaway Scholarship. Students may now choose Foreign Language, Career and Technical Education (CTE), or Fine and Performing Arts (FPA) as an elective choice in pursuing the Performance or Honors level scholarship of the Hathaway. Two sequenced years in any of those areas is required. The Opportunity or Provisional Opportunity levels of the Hathaway requirements did not change. These changes go into effect immediately for students graduating in 2019 or 2020. If you have questions about your students’ specific eligibility for the Hathaway Scholarship under the new guidelines, please contact the Guidance Counselor Department at their high school.

FAQS

How did the Hathaway Success Curriculum requirements change as a result of SF0043?

SF0043 provides more flexibility for students in meeting the success curriculum requirements for the Hathaway Scholarship Program. Specifically, students pursuing a Performance or Honors level scholarship may choose their elective pathway in the areas of Foreign Language, Career and Technical Education (CTE), or Fine and Performing Arts (FPA). Students must take a minimum of two sequenced years in any of these content areas. For students pursuing the Opportunity or Provisional Opportunity levels of the scholarship, the success curriculum requirements did not change.

Is Foreign Language still required for the Performance or Honors level of the Hathaway Scholarship?

No. Students can now choose to take four years of courses in either CTE, FPA, or foreign language.

Do the new elective courses need to be sequenced?

Two of the four required years must be sequenced in CTE, FPA, or Foreign Language. For example, Welding I/Welding II, Spanish I/Spanish II, and Art I/Art II would all meet the sequenced requirement. The other two years can be in CTE, FPA, and FL. *More information on specific sequence requirements and choices for courses will be provided soon from WDE*

When do the new Hathaway Success Curriculum requirements take effect?  For students graduating in 2019 and 2020 (this year’s juniors and seniors), students can qualify for a Hathaway Scholarship by meeting either the new requirements outlined in SF0043 or the current requirements. For students graduating in 2021 and beyond, the new requirements outlined in SF0043 will be in full effect.
