At Dean Morgan Middle School, Morgan Mentors serve as role models who exemplify strong character and a commitment to fostering a positive school environment. Each year, students are chosen for their outstanding leadership abilities, positivity, and helpful attitude to represent the school and help guide their peers.
Morgan Mentors work to support, inspire, and engage with their peers, teachers, and school families. The group is involved in many school-based engagement projects designed to celebrate and spread joy throughout the school. Student Brook McCarthy enjoys the active involvement of Morgan Mentors in school-based activities, events, and decision-making processes. “We get to plan events and make really cool things happen for our school. We get to be creative, imaginative, and get to bring our new ideas to the table.” Brook also appreciates the chance to grow her leadership skills while being a Mentor, “It helps with responsibility. We have jobs that we have to do, shifts, and you have to know when to come to meetings. You also have respect for all your peers who are putting in their time and effort. It improves your relationships and experience.”
Collaborating with their teachers and school leaders, Morgan Mentors play an active role in organizing and helping at events like parent-teacher conference nights, school dances, 5th-grade transition day, Comet Camp, and more, where they assist with event logistics, guide visitors, and make sure everyone feels welcome and excited. “One of the biggest and important things that we do and spend a lot of time on is our Veterans Day program. We come really early in the morning, line up flags around the school, and work together with other student groups,” shared Emma Papich. “As Morgan Mentors, we truly want to be leaders for the other kids, and stay a great leader. My favorite thing about Dean Morgan is that with Morgan Mentors, it's just good that kids with the same perspective as kids going to this school can make it better.”
These events allow students to develop teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills while helping ensure all Comets feel welcomed and encouraged at DMMS. 6th-grade student Auri Lara remembers the kindness and positivity shared by Morgan Mentors during these events. “Students who will be incoming 6th graders come to DMMS, and they take classes and learn about the school; Morgan Mentors help with that and make them feel welcome. There is some pretty great stuff here at Dean Morgan; I love seeing my friends every day. It is an amazing thing that we get to help make decisions, help other students, and make this school even better.” Throughout the year, the Morgan Mentors also share study tips and advice with other students, helping them achieve academic success.
In addition to their involvement in school events, Morgan Mentors focus on spreading positivity throughout the school. They are role models for their peers, making sure that their actions reflect the core values of Comet Pride! Whether helping a fellow student with their locker combination or offering a kind word to someone having a tough day, the Morgan Mentors work hard to promote a school culture that values kindness, acceptance, and respect. For Grayson Begley, that’s one of the best parts of being a Morgan Mentor: “There is a responsibility of caring about and loving your school. It’s such an amazing place here, I love that there are so many different personalities. We work hard to have good character, encourage others, and make sure everyone loves it here.”
