Journey Elementary Heroes Soaring onto Global Competition with Destination Imagination Success!

Destination Imagination is an educational program that helps students learn and practice valuable skills like creative and critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork through different competitive, STEAM-based (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) challenges. Each season, teams are given new and engaging Team Challenges to encourage students to explore their passions, discover their unique talents and abilities, collaborate with their peers, and learn new skills.

This year, Journey Heroes competed in two groups, solving the Engineering and Technical Challenges. The Journey Jungle Circus team excelled in designing, building, and problem-solving to produce their self-propelled tightrope train, called the High Wire Act, addressing the Engineering Challenge. For this event challenge, students were tasked with creating a self-propelled transportation device that moves across a high wire while carrying weights and presented in a story of a circus. The Journey Mystics team showcased their innovative thinking and teamwork skills with the “Breaking Point” Technical Challenge. For this project, students were asked to create a device that could stack items without using their hands. Journey students mastered this challenge by incorporating a robot within their skit as they displayed the 'frustration points' the characters had to overcome.

Heroes shared some highlighted moments from Destination Imagination:

“The most important thing I learned was to see what other people are doing first, and see how we can work together instead of just doing our own thing.” ~ Steven

“My favorite part was working together with my teammates to solve problems and working through our disagreements together.” ~Lydia

“My favorite part was making the music for our skit. I have been playing piano for a few years, so it is really fun to use it for a new experience.” ~ Santiago

"I have learned to never give up. I have had a bunch of ideas that didn't work, and then I tried one more time and it worked." ~ Silas

This year, the Destination Imagination Global Finals will take place May 21-26 in Kansas City, Missouri. Students are working hard to fundraise for this exciting opportunity with numerous events coming up for the community to show their support.

Journey Elementary is committed to providing an engaging learning environment for students based on differentiated instruction.

Excellent work, Journey Heroes!
