Pathways Innovation Center hosted its annual Apprenticeship Day in sequence with National Apprenticeship week. This collaborative celebration between industry, labor, workforce, education, and community leaders has a priority focus on connecting students to opportunities after graduation.
Ray Pacheco, Mayor of Casper, kicked off the event by reading a proclamation honoring the value apprenticeship opportunities provide to both employers and apprentices while sharing his gratitude for the collaborative partnerships, “It’s incredibly important to look at the continued economic development of our state and opportunities to keep our young people here in Wyoming. These types of programs are fantastic because they help young people find their passion while connecting local and statewide industry partners to the youth and talent of our community.”
High school students wandering throughout the building had plenty of options to learn about opportunities for their continued success after graduation with a wide variety of community partners in attendance. Intentional planning and collaboration with students and school families for student success to and after graduation is a priority focus of Natrona County’s high school system. At Pathways Innovation Center, students can take courses of study that include college–preparatory curriculum, industry certifications, portfolio development, and internships. These opportunities and experiences are aligned with student interests which work towards fulfilling community needs.
Principal Honken shared his appreciation for the student opportunities events like this provide, “As students transition to their future path after achieving graduation, their next steps may not always be exactly known to them. Apprenticeship opportunities and community partnerships can help them to explore what their passion is and provide them with information about possibilities after graduation. The more opportunity we can provide to students to find their passion, plan for their future, and explore their interests and talents, the greater chance they will be set on the right trajectory for successfully moving on to college, trade school, the workforce, the military, or whichever next path their future holds.” Speaking of talent, Pathways Culinary Arts students and staff showcased their passion by preparing lunch for community partners in attendance. The menu consisted of culinary delights certain to receive a 5-star rating from all those in attendance.
NCSD Career Facilitator, Guy Sallade, credits the success of this annual event to the community partners who take time out of their busy workday to build connections and share information with students, “It really was its own impetus to grow, and over the years, it has taken on a life of its own. When we first started with this idea of building community partnerships, I had an electrical group come in and talk to students. Word got out, and the next day, I had a voicemail from another group asking to come in and talk to students. It just grew organically to where we are today.” Though Mr. Sallade is quick to provide accolades to others for their contributions to student success, others are quick to share their appreciation for his work towards the same. “I want to thank all of the tremendous staff here at Pathways who work hard to provide not only tremendous learning opportunities but community connections as well for our students. I especially want to thank Guy, without his tireless efforts and passion for encouraging and supporting all students in their individual endeavors, events like today wouldn’t be possible,” reflected Principal Honken.
NCSD is committed to working to develop and engage in community partnerships that will foster a climate of academic success, post-secondary readiness, and future career opportunities for all students. “Every student matters, every day. We are dedicated to serving the best interest of all students and staff. Our school families and community partners are integral to reaching our shared goal of educational excellence and opportunity for every student,” shared Superintendent Jennings.
Mayor Pacheco offered his gratitude for the experience Pathways provides while sharing some words of advice and inspiration for those in attendance, “College isn’t for everyone, and that’s ok. Success cannot be measured solely by grades or a degree in your pocket. Success can also be measured by your passion. Look for the things you are passionate about and go after them with all your heart.”
