The literacy-based fundraiser is not only an excellent way to enjoy the magic of a great book, but funds raised will help support students in a variety of ways throughout the academic year!
Students can log minutes for classroom reading, as well as independent reading they do at home! Some classes are having a friendly competition to see who can read the most minutes. Students log how many minutes they read through the Read-A-Thon website, and family members can donate to support them in their literary endeavors!
Eighth-grader Emma currently has logged over 1,200 reading minutes! "Reading this much is pretty normal for me; I really like reading. My original goal was to read 1000 minutes, but my new goal is to read 3000 minutes."
Sixth-grader Ethan has currently raised over $300.00 in donations! "I didn't really have a goal for donations, but I have raised a lot, and I am happy with that."
Their fundraiser goes through October 26th and will wrap up with a root-beer float celebration for student participants!

CY Middle School Librarian Jill Weibel shared her excitement in seeing the students engage in literacy throughout the fundraiser thus far, "Listening to the kids talk and share about a book they have all read is really pretty neat. It really is a bonding experience for many of us all throughout life. The love of reading is also important to help build confidence in kids. If they can read, they can apply it to every area of their life whether it is for fun or for work."
Since this is their first year participating in the Read-A-Thon, the fundraising goal was orginally set at $600, however, the excitement of the students participating has been contagious and so far they have raised over $2,700! "Typically fundraisers are done through selling things, but with this, a lot of people are excited that their kids are earning by reading. The amazing support shown by all the families of these kids has been really fun to see," shared Ms. Weibel.
