Student Culinary Program Teachers Learn New Skills
Denise Smith of Natrona County High School, Family Consumer Science Instructor and Calvin Colling of Transitions, ProStart Instructor, joined over 25 other instructors at the 2nd Annual ProStart© Teacher Training Institute in Cheyenne last week. The restaurant management program for secondary high school students is sponsored by the Wyoming Lodging and Restaurant Association and the National Restaurant Association. The first and second year classes in the school include training in organizing, planning and implementing work plans in a restaurant setting. Instructors networked with each other and learned about more tools available to them from the national program. Teachers discussed their experiences and an industry panel made up of managers from Wyoming hotels and restaurants answered their questions about what they look for in employees.ProStart© is unique as a career technical program because the curriculum was written by the food service industry and provides real life situations for students and their teachers. One new initiative is to begin an ethics/self motivation program modeled after “The Code of the West.” A pilot program will include teachers, industry representatives and students who will develop and test the program within the ProStart© concept.
