Winter Bridges Update
Day two report, by Frank Mello
The second day of Winter Bridges provided more excitement and learning activities for students of Natrona County School District #1. A special thank you to the certified tutors who are providing the instruction, the transportation department for the rides and bus driver's smiling faces, the Community Relation's Department for arranging FRED activities and the Jeff Yalden books, to the food services department for providing the "yummy" lunches to fuel the minds and bodies of the students, and to all others who made this happen for our students.
Too many activities took place to mention them all but to recap a few.
At the high school level many students are taking advantage of this extra time and assistance in their endeavors in earning credits toward graduation. Whether it is finishing a research paper, completing assignments, or making another attempt to master test materials or an area of proficiency the students were appreciative of this opportunity to assist in achieving their goals.
At the middle school/junior high level many of the students had the opportunity to participate assembly, by Jeff Yalden, at Dean Morgan Junior High. Jeff is also spending time doing breakout sessions with each of the junior high/middle schools as well. All junior high/middle school students were provided with a copy of Jeff's book They Call Me Coach. Jeff is a dynamic speaker who has spoken to teens in 48 states in over 3500 appearances and appears on MTV's longest running reality-show, Made.
At Verda James Elementary, principal Steve Ellbogen looked like a late sighting of Santa Clause dropping boxes from the school’s roof. However, these boxes were not gifts, they were designed to absorb the impact so that the contents of the box (an egg) did not break. This activity was part of the Club Invention Module that the Verda James students participated in. Other schools participated in Club Invention activities as well. Students at Paradise Valley Elementary enjoyed the thematic approach to learning through cooking activities. Sagewood Elementary students were working hard with members of the Casper Children's Theatre. The students at Evansville Elementary were quick to share the gravity defying designs from the previous day.
The list of learning activities goes on and on. It will be exciting to see what the next three days of Winter Bridges will bring.
District Improvement
The Natrona County School District has set a course for student success by identifying key components to improve student achievement, by targeting interventions for at-risk students, and by focusing on across-the-district professional development for teachers.
In pursuing this course for success, and in response to NCSD's status as a district in need of improvement under the No Child Left Behind Act, NCSD developed a district improvement plan. The plan was developed by a task force of teachers, administrators, parents and community members.
Though the district did make adequate yearly progress (AYP) under NCLB in 2006-07, the district improvement plan provides a path to continue improvement for our students.
