Bar Nunn Elementary School was recently named a National PTA School of Excellence for the 2016-2018 school years. To celebrate this accomplishment the school community recently held a celebration event. Principal René Rickabaugh and Bar Nunn PTA President (and Bar Nunn Elementary staff member) Kim Adams explained to the assembled students and parents how Bar Nunn was able to achieve the award. Bar Nunn sent surveys to their parents regarding efforts the school makes to involve their community and parents. The responses to this survey and recommendations from the National PTA formed a path forward for improvement. Bar Nunn was able to adopt and implement many of those recommendations, leading to the award. Also at the event the drama club performed a song from their upcoming production of The Jungle Book.
National PTA’s School of Excellence program supports and celebrates partnerships between PTAs and schools that work to improve the educational experience and school environment for every child. At Bar Nunn, families feel welcomed and empowered to support student success, and PTA is a key partner for continuous school improvement. The School of Excellence program provided guidance to assist Bar Nunn in engaging families in school decision-making, and help the school build inclusive policies related to education, health, safety or the arts.
Specifically, Bar Nunn holds numerous events that bring their parents and community members together, including Bingo for Books, Spring Carnival, and monthly pancake breakfasts. According to a PTA survey, Bar Nunn parents feel that they are always included in school news and events – a key strength for the school. Bar Nunn has also made strides in the inclusion of their English as a Second Language (ESL) families by providing translators at major events, individual meetings, and translated newsletters. In addition, Bar Nunn parents serve on various boards within the school, including the parent committee, school improvement planning team, budget planning team, building planning team, leadership committee, and Title I district committee.
Congratulations to Bar Nunn Elementary School for their commitment to their school community!
